Extracting raw materials, creating habitats
The extraction of mineral raw materials is an intervention in nature. At the same time, however, it also opens up opportunities to create new habitats for endangered animals and plants. WOLFF & MÜLLER Quarzsande is already working towards the creation of ecological conservation areas during the extraction of the deposits. In doing so, we always pursue the goal of returning the areas to the public with a higher ecological value after the extraction of raw materials has been completed.
WOLFF & MÜLLER Quarzsande GmbH has been a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Foundation for Nature and the Environment for many years and has been honoured with its environmental award.
- Preservation of two natural islands for breeding birds
- Creation of two new artificial islands in cooperation with the Southern Palatinate Nature Conservation Association for the common tern
- Planting of 4,400 trees and shrubs in the Daxlander Au to create a biotope network on a former 1.5 ha maize field (1986)
- Creation of a steep bank for the sand martin and the kingfisher
- Conversion of approx. 8 ha of maize fields into meadows and bee meadows
- Shallow water zones as spawning waters for fish
- Placement of 60 bird nesting boxes around the lake
- Land reclamation and recultivation with the planting of approx. 100 fruit trees and 1000 shrubs

Supported by a local beekeeper, we now have 17 bee colonies that produce our own honey.
- Avoidance of ground work during the breeding season of ground nesting birds and creation of so-called "lark windows" as compensatory measures in the surrounding area
- Implementation of measures on steep walls with caves only outside the breeding season of bee-eaters and sand martins
- Protection of reptile habitats
- Utilisation of the stock by a local beekeeper
